Electrostatic charges can build up on a fabric, for instance through rubbing on another non-conductive surface, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) can generate sparks with energy levels sufficient to ignite possible surrounding vapours, aerosols of flammable liquids or dust particles, and cause fire and explosion.

Most of Nomex® solutions include a permanent antistatic fibre that helps fabrics made of Nomex® fibres to dissipate static electricity. The antistatic property of the garment is fundamental to protect workers in hazardous atmospheres.

Such fabrics are tested according to EN 1149-3 and address the electrostatic protection requirements of EN 1149-5 for protective clothing.
