Fires can be disastrous, as much for the workers who are exposed to them as for the businesses that endure them. Over 40 years ago, DuPont recognised the need for flame-resistant clothing that offered protection to those that are at risk of exposure to fire hazards. DuPont scientists created Nomex® fibre, a revolutionary flame-resistant material that helps provide firefighters, industrial workers, police officers and military forces with protection from intense heat, flames and fires.
Nomex® fibre helps minimise break-open and maintains a stable, inert barrier between the fire and skin, helping protect the wearer from direct exposure. In the face of these hazards, Nomex® fibre helps fabric form a tough, protective char, staying supple until it cools. What’s more, Nomex® won’t melt or drip, unlike other fabrics that degrade and add the risk of melted material to the burn trauma.
In Europe, DuPont has established the DuPont™ Nomex® Partner Programme. The partners constitute a select group of customer-oriented fabric producers and garment manufacturers whose fabrics and garments adhere to stringent quality controls of DuPont. This helps ensure the consistent provision of their product performance and service levels associated with Nomex® solutions.
Nomex® is an intelligent flame-resistant fibre: it thickens when exposed to intense heat, creating a protective barrier between the heat source and the wearer’s skin.

In order to choose adequate protective clothing, the potential incident heat energy (in units of energy per surface area) caused by an electric arc and to which a worker may be exposed, needs to be calculated in a thorough risk assessment.

Dupont™ Nomex® Thermal-Industrial Innovation Awards Bring Innovation to the Forefront at A+A 2015
