Safeguard your workers by predicting the severity of arc flash hazards so you can assess and manage risk more effectively.  Electrical arc is one of the most deadly and least understood hazards of electricity, and assessing for risk is essential to the well-being of electrical workers.  A fundamental safety principle is to design out, eliminate or remove the hazard at its source.  This means that the majority of electrical tasks must be carried out with the equipment made dead.

When equipment cannot be made dead for whatever reason, electrical arc can occur.

Hazard measurement and incident energy

The severity of the thermal effect of an arc flash is defined by the amount of incident energy that a victim, standing at a given distance away from the arc, could receive to the skin surface.

To truly understand the risks of arc flash hazard, you need to be able to calculate the incident energy.  This is why a tool to calculate incident energy is an important part of the 4P Methodology.

Look at ways to prevent arc flash from occurring and endangering your workers.

If work does proceed despite the presence of the arc flash hazard, you may want to consider outfitting your workers in PPE.  However PPE should always be considered a last resort in the following hierarchy of risk control measures:

  1. Elimination of the arc flash hazard
  2. Minimisation/engineering controls
  3. Safe Systems of Work
  4. Information and Training
  5. PPE



When prevention is not enough, protective measures such as PPE may be required.

Where risk cannot be controlled by preventive measures or when residual incident energies above 1.2 cal/cm2 remain after applying all possible hazard, exposure and risk reduction techniques, it is necessary to bring in PPE as a form of risk mitigation to prevent injury to the worker.

PPE is the last line of defence and does not prevent arc flash from occurring.
